Music Video Coursework : Shooting Day #1 and #2

Today, we went to our first location which is 'The Bounty' pub. This is where we filmed his acoustic guitars. We went earlier than everyone else so we could set up so we could replicate the lighting like we had done in the recce as we thought that it worked with the feeling that we had wanted to create. Around lunch time, Gianluca and Juliet arrived with the appropriate clothing and we started filming. We had filmed extra footage that we wanted to use for the narrative which is when they both walk out and in and see each other then pause and walk past each other then we see him leave. This took constant filming of the feet, eyes, face etc.. which was very hard although, the actors were very compliant with what we had asked from them. The bounty pub were very helpful and they allowed us to play the song (REPEATEDLY) for us to get the shots we needed for the actual shoot. This allowed us to match the singing and struming to the music so we could edit that perfectly on the pre-production stages. Overall, it was a good day and I am happy that it all wen as smoothly as it did.

The second day of shooting we all got there at around 11:30am and walked to the corn field at the right time. This is when the sun was at its highest point and so there was more sunlight so when filming there was already natural warm colours. It was the first time the artist and actress had met so it was awkward at first but after a few takes, the 2 got along and actually had a bit of spark which helped the romantic part to our music video. They were both very patient, professional and co-operative which was good as we could obtain the things we needed while building a good relationship with them. They worked well together and with us which in turn made what could have been a stressful shoot day due to weather or location going wrong into a relaxed environment.

To conclude both days went well for me and Sapir when shooting our music video, the atmosphere was very relaxed as we knew what we wanted to achieve in the time we had and both actors cooperated well.

Music Video Coursework : Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment is a systematic process of evaluating the potential risks that may be involved in a projected activity or undertaking.
The purpose of risk assessment includes the prevention of any risks, and this should always be a goal. Where elimination of risks is not possible, the risks should be reduced and controlled.
This really seemed like such a waste of time but when you think about it, in the real life world, working on a location with actors/actresses, it is very essential that you care for their needs and make sure their safe. If something does happen, it relies on you to solve it and so risk assessment makes it easier to check what to do rather than panicking in the heat of the moment.

Music Video Coursework : Recording Day

We decided that an important thing for our music video is to have good quality music.
This was sound beforehand was not of a good quality and Sophie and I really thought we should get a better quality song and our first thought was to take Gianluca to a professional recording studio and that's what we did. When planning all of these things, we came across a very local recording studio so we called them up and after a bit of negotiation, we got a good price and a date for recording.

Unfortunately, Gianluca, took down the recording of the song before the professional recording was made and therefore we cannot show you the difference.

I think thee recording session went very well, Gianluca seemed very happy with the end result and in addition, he got the recording for free. We managed to record the track several times which allowed him to go back on the track and make any changes or pick-up on some mistakes that he had made. We also got a digital copy and a hard disk copy for our post-production.

Sophie and I were both much happier with the end result and were satisfied that we got on a CD for safe keeping especially as we were going to give one to Gianluca and keep one for us.

Analysis Of Indie/Singer-Songwriter Music Videos #5 : I Will Wait by Mumfords and Sons

Song : I Will Wait
Artist : Mumfords and Sons
Director : Fred & Nick

Genre Characteristics:
You see the setting of the place where they are playing and you see the band and their audience.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals? :
The main lyrics ‘I Will Wait For You’ is when the visuals picks up and speeds up. In addition, you see the band more in the chorus rather than the verse where you see the audience.

What is the relationship between music and visuals? :
When the music becomes faster, the visuals cuts become faster. For Example, 1:42 – 1:51, the music speeds up so the visuals cuts become faster.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs :
You see Mumfords and Sons play with their instruments in close-up and their facial expressions when they sing and play music.

Is there reference to the notion of looking? :
None.

Are there intertextual references? :
No because the band is just performing a piece of music they did.

Is it performance-based, narrative-based, concept-based? How much for each?

It is performance-based because we only see throughout the whole music video the band playing their song and nothing else.

Analysis Of Indie/Singer-Songwriter Music Videos #4 : Please Don't Say You Love Me by Gabrielle Aplin

Song: Please Don’t Say You Love Me
Artist: Gabrielle Aplin
Director:

Genre Characteristics:
A couple are driving on the road and then get stuck because they don’t have gas and go to the nearest place. While dancing, the girl looks at some other guy so her ‘supposed’ boyfriend leaves to sleep in the car, leaving the girl feeling guilty but makes up for it when she comes back to the car and gets a break down truck and they are happy again.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals? :
Key lyrics are portrayed through the visuals such as ‘presence’ is shown with a shot of both of them. The first few lines of the second verse, it says ‘these things can break’ and so the next few seconds of the video displays that the couple’s relationship breaks a bit. Near to the end, the lyrics say ‘look at me like that’ and she looks at him ‘like that’, like she is in love.
When the lyrics is ‘Please, Don’t Say You Love Me’, you see Gabrielle as the singer.

What is the relationship between music and visuals? :
When the music is slow, the visual editing cuts are slower. When the music is fast then the visual editing cuts are faster.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs :
There are close-ups of the artist when in particular parts of the lyrics such as ‘Please, Don’t Say You Love Me’ especially at the end. It gives off a feeling that this has happened to her and although she was in a relationship like this, she still didn’t want that personal to say ‘I love you’ etc…

Is there reference to the notion of looking? :
There is not reference of looking.

Are there intertextual references? :
There is not intertextual references because the video does not show any gender references in any way.

Is it performance-based, narrative-based, concept-based? How much for each?

It is mainly narrative-based because there is a storyline to the video as said in the general characteristics of the video. But you could suggest that it is somewhat of a performance because Gabrielle Aplin, herself is singing. Although, she is not performing to a crowd with her guitar she is still singing throughout the whole video seen through the visuals.

Analysis Of Indie/Singer-Songwriter Music Videos #3 : Keep You Head Up by Ben Howard

Song : Keep Your Head Up
Artist : Ben Howard
Director : sfsf

Genre Characteristics:
The video is all about 3 people building a slide out of hay and black plastic bin liners. We see the scenery of the setting they have filmed the video. The start of the video portrays the end of the video.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals? :
Some key lyrics are presented through visual such as ‘Darkness’ is seen in dark woods, ‘skin’ shows the feet in the water. When the lyric drags a ‘no’ to ‘no, no no’, the visuals drags the shot longer. When he sings ‘keep your head up’ in the last verse and chorus, the 3 friends have kept their heads up in the slide.

What is the relationship between music and visuals? :
After each different chord or string plucked, the shot changes. When the music fastens, the visuals fastens. When the music becomes slow, the shots that are used are slow cuts and the shots are kept for a longer time.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs:
There is close-ups of the artist when he sings ‘me’ and the first verse and chorus is mostly him until he sings ‘friends’ where 2 of his ‘supposed’ friends comes in. So key lyrics used.

Is there reference to the notion of looking? :
There isn’t a reference to notion of looking because the video is mainly looking at the people themselves and what they are doing rather than the artist looking at the camera and singing. There may be one possible reference where he stars at his feet when he sings ‘skin’ but apart from that there is nothing else that you see.

Are there intertextual references? :
There are no intertextual references as it is not something that uses other media reference in it, it is just a small ‘project’

Is it performance-based, narrative-based, concept-based? How much for each?

It is narrative based as it is telling a story of his friends and him making a slide and sliding down it until the end where they jump into a river.

Analysis Of Indie/Singer-Songwriter Music Videos #2 : You Need Me, I Don't Need You by Ed Sheeran

Song : You Need Me, I Don't Need You
Artist : Ed Sheeran
Director : Emil Nava

Genre Characteristics:
A person who is assumed deaf as he is signing in a sign language the lyrics to his music.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals? :
The male character is signing in sign language to the music. A few key lyrics such as ‘Brit School’ shows a playhouse that looks posh assuming British.

What is the relationship between music and visuals? :
After each line of lyrics, the shot changes to a different shot of him (the male kid) or something else.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star image motifs :
When it is talking about him or ‘other artisits’ then there is a close-up but otherwise it is a mid or a ‘zoom out’ shot. There are glimpse shots of Ed Sheeran playing the guitar and there is a close-up of the guitar or a mid of Ed Sheeran but  he is in black with the white background

Is there reference to the notion of looking? :

Are there intertextual references? :
There is a reference to other artists.

Is it performance-based, narrative-based, concept-based? How much for each?
It is performance-based as many of the people cast in the music video is based on the lyrics and dance to the lyrics.
