Music Video Coursework : Editing Third and Fourth Cut

The third week was really about putting all the necessary shots needed together but it really didn't feel like a music video. One reason to this was that the shots we put together was very long and so it felt like a short film with flashbacks more than an actual the music video. But after referring back to our research we had done from the start of the process, we realised that alot of the music video from our genre had short cuts but of different angles and set ups of playing the guitar. So not only did we apply this to our music video but there was still something missing especially at bridge/instrumental part of the song.

After showing our teacher the music video so far and explaining to him key ideas we put in and the situation we had, he made us realise that in the instrumental part, you could hear 2 guitars - acoustic (from before) and electric. So he suggested to us that it would be a great addition, if you could film that as well. After planning how we were going to do the 2nd unit, we decided to go ahead with the plans and actually shoot it for that weekend in time to check the footage and put it in the music video

The fourth week was still editing and perfecting the whole first part of the music video as the singer could not make the weekend we wanted to do the shoot so we had to do it the fourth week's weekend. The shoot was alright apart from a couple of thing, when actually arrived to the location, it took around 50mins after school so as it was in October, the lighting was not the same as the sun was setting. In addition, the corn from the set up with Juliet and Gianluca, had been cut down, which was a big problem as there would not of been that continuous flow between the 2 shots. But fortunately, we discussed that most of our shots that we shot listed and storyboarded was close-up so it was fine because we would have not of captured the background as much. Actually, shooting  him was fine as we stuck to the schedule and asked him to sing along with the electric guitar at the end of the song incase if we wanted to of kept those shots. We had also decided that we should get a shot of him walking away (which was not storyboarded or shot listed) at the end so make we could put that at the end of the music video to finish it off.

Music Video Coursework : Editing First and Second Cut

For the first few weeks, putting down particular tracks was easy for us as we knew how to work the programme and we used different tools to short-cut the process for us. It really felt like the pieces were matching up as the music video really made more sense when looking at it electronically put together then on paper using storyboards and shot lists. Although, we did use our pre-production pack to identify and make new 'bins' (folders in Final Cut Pro (FCP)) and name them to particular things such as 'Bounty' which was the pub we shot at or 'Field' and so we would drop the different shots into them making it easier to pick particular shots that we needed because it was filtered into specific names for us to use.

The first week, we decided that it was essential to look through all of our footage to what we really needed or scrap the ones we didn't as we did not want to use footage that was not of a high quality standard. In addition, we wanted to lay out a few tracks down to see how it looks overall and then afterwards we really start making music video cuts.

In the second week, we really got editing that week as we planned to smooth out the transition between the pubs set ups of him singing with the field shots where he and Juliet were acting. As we did this before with the AS coursework - our assumption was that it would be simple and we would only have to put a few cuts in each set ups. But actually, it was a lot longer than I thought it would have of taken. We spent most of our free in the first few weeks because to get a particular sync right with the visuals and music was very difficult. Also, getting an appropriate shot in a specific part was easier but you still had to understand what shots worked and didn't work with the previous set ups.

Music Video Coursework : Treatment

*Ignore The Music Part*

A treatment is a breakdown of your movie story, the foundation for a screenplay
It reveals the full story and its structure, and shows the main and secondary characters
personalities, relationships, and how they change and develop.

Although, a treatment normally is for a movie or short story, we purposely created one for the music video because it helped us break down everything we needed to focus on for the music video filming and to aid us with why we did everything we did.
